At the ULU Coop, our goal is to provide transparency and low transactions costs in raising funds for environmental conservation and restoration, with a particular focus on areas where native forests and populations co-exist and are under threat from economic development.
We believe that ecosystem deterioration, soil erosion, mass extinction and climate change are everybody’s business and we seek to give consumers a stake in the matter. Our approach is to provide opportunities for innovation.
Today the complexity of supply chains makes it very difficult for consumers to trust that the products they buy come from sustainable sources. On top of this, environment conservation generates extra costs for companies that are under pressure to provide stable employment and deliver returns for their shareholders in very competitive environments. Management of these companies do not have a mandate to actively look after the environment unless their customers and other stakeholders require them to do so.
The conservation role is left to not-for-profit conservation organisations, which wage a slowly losing war to save what can be saved. We need to mandate and support the businesses that operate in sensitive natural ecosystems to preserve or even enhance the environment. In our views, this is the only way to stop and reverse deforestation, the extinction of species, soil erosion, water pollution and climate change.
It is time for consumers to enter the ring and also take responsibility. We consumers are a powerful force, through our consumption we have the power – and arguably the duty – to reward companies that look after the environment for future generations and to demand from the commercial sector that they support such efforts. In return we also have the responsibility to purchase products that are as environmentally sustainable as possible, which also helps companies that spend more on sustainable ingredients for their products.
We are starting small, with a first campaign to raise 100,000 USD from businesses, but we trust in the power of an idea, which time has come.
